Come out to the oldest celebration of National Coming Out Day in the world at this year’s OutFest in Philadelphia. Embarking on its 28th annual celebration of the LGBT community, it promises to be one amazing experience, and here’s why.
OutFest is the largest National Coming Out Day celebration in the world, and it will return to our world-famous Gayborhood this October. Celebrating in Philadelphia not only ties you to a remarkable history, but also puts you in touch with a number of fun experiences and events.
In 1990, the inaugural Outfest made Philadelphia the first city to host an annual National Coming Out Day Event. Five years later, Philly Pride became the first LGBT pride group to publicly acknowledge a straight friend in the city’s Grand Marshall. That same year, the term “The Gayborhood” was coined, making the area a haven for LGBT events ever since. Philadelphia is now widely regarded as one of the world’s most gay friendly destinations.
Most of OutFest’s celebrations will take place along 12th and 13th streets between Walnut and Spruce streets. Here you’ll find a free-to-attend block party with drinks and food available for purchase. With the outdoor bars come amazing dance parties, and a number of other fun things including live music performances.
OutFest annually welcomes over 150 vendors to set up shop for a day of shopping and eating. Grab food and drinks provided by local chefs and bartenders, shop some handmade goods, and peruse set-ups by local LGBT nonprofits to discover new ways to support and help the community. There will also be DJs, a dunk tank, a mechanical bull, drag shows, high heel races, and much more fun.
Philadelphia’s 2018 Outfest will once again take place at 13th and Locust streets, and it will be held on Sunday, October 7th. For a nice hotel room within walking distance, check out the luxurious and welcoming accommodations here at the Independent Hotel.
