Philly is a street fair city, and there are dozens of can’t-miss festivals throughout the year that make it easy to get out and have fun. Quality food, drinks, music, events, and activities keep tens of thousands of people coming back every year. Here are some of the best festivals that light up Philadelphia annually.

Science comes to life in big and small ways at the interactive Philadelphia Science Festival. Over 70,000 people flocked to the festivities in 2016, and the festival is only expected to get bigger as more and more activities and events are added. Slime-making, DNA extraction from a strawberry, and robot exploration are some of the cool hands-on happenings that visitors can expect. A sprawling carnival, over 150 exhibitors, live performances, experiments, workshops, lectures—there’s something for everyone at this science and technology celebration.

The 9th Street Italian Market Festival is one that we’ve featured before, and it’s one that you shouldn’t miss. Live entertainment, games, crafts, vendors, and the Italian Market’s delicious selection of sausages, cannolis, imported meats and cheese, and fresh pastas are all on display for sidewalk-goers. If the variety of Italian eats and drinks doesn’t convince you, a greased pole-climbing contest is reason enough to check it out.

One of the region’s largest outdoor, juried arts festivals rolls into Manayunk every summer. Over 300 artists from around the country open stalls for the two-day Manayunk Arts Festival, and mediums like jewelry, glass, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture, photography, and paint are on display and for sale. In addition to the art, visitors can enjoy crafts, music, and food from local restaurants.

The Philadelphia Film Festival brings together the best in independent and foreign cinema. Hosted by the Philadelphia Film Society, dozens of theaters and venues throughout the city showcase dozens of films from around the globe. Appearances from special guests highlight select events, and every year the festival features blockbuster opening and closing night films. Short, feature-length, and animated films are just some of the mediums and genres that are included. This is an excellent opportunity to soak in a variety of films that aren’t typically in theaters.
