The 40th Street Summer Series takes place on August 30 and September 27 in University City, featuring outdoor concerts and delicious summer eats! 40th Street is now a hub of delicious eats including Distrito, HipCityVeg and Ben & Jerry’s. The summer series, originally was launched to increase patronage to the local 40th street businesses during the slower summer dates when many Penn students (the bread and butter for many of these businesses) aren’t around. The 40th Street Summer Series is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the local flavors of 40th Street and all that West Philly has to offer.
On August 30th don’t miss Nation Beat and The Highwater Preachers. The secret to Nation Beat’s infectious sound is its unique blend of Carnival and Mardi Gras beats. Think high energy drumming and singing with an undercurrent of Latin beats. This six person band consists of vocalist Fabiana Masili, guitarist Mark Marshal, bassist Zê Grey , Aaron Shafer-Haiss and Fernando Saci. One musical reviewer remarked: “[their] cross-pollination of music [is] nothing short of groundbreaking.”
The High Water Preachers also take the stage on August 30th. This Philly based Blue Grass group will have you up and dancing in no time with their authentic blue grass sounds. All shows start at 6:00 P.M.
September 27 don’t miss Man Man an experimental Philly based band. Man Man is known for their wide variety of instruments including the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn and bass. The resulting sound is funky, unique and definitely dance-worthy.
Featured food vendors include Distrito, HipCityVeg and Ben and Jerry’s. Distrito (3945 Chestnut St.) Chef Jose Garces brings the tastes of Mexico City to West Philly. Standout items include the enchiladas and the mole. Hip City Veg (214 S. 40th) offers fun vegetarian twists on fast food. Don’t miss any of their veggie burgers, the “chicken ranch” sandwich and sweet potato fries are absolutely delish. Ben & Jerry’s (218 S. 40th St.) is a classic. You can’t go wrong with any of their flavors and we’re sure to never miss free cone day!
