In the mood for a roaring, wild night? Check out Broadway Philadelphia: The Lion King at the Academy of Music, running from Wednesday, May 20 – Sunday, June 14th. The smash hit Broadway musical, based on the 1994 animated movie of the same name, is the fourth longest-running show in history and the highest grossing production of all time. Since its Broadway premier in 1997 this Disney classic has been seen by more than 75 million people, and after playing more than 70 cities across North America, The Lion King returns once again to Philadelphia.
Winner of six Tony Awards, including the 1998 Tony Award for Best Musical, the production’s score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning songs from The Lion King film, “Hakuna Matata,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Circle of Life.” The musical also features music from South African composer Lebo M, as well as from Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and the legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The resulting score is an unforgettable combination of Western pop music with African rhythms and sound.
In addition to its Tony Awards, the Lion King has won more than 70 major awards including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, as well as the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design for the musical’s London West End production. The Lion King’s director, costume designer and animal mask co-designer Julie Taymor was the first woman to win a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical and continues to stay involved in the show.
The musical follows the story of the young lion Simba, the heir to the kingdom of the Pride Lands on the African savannah, as he struggles to regain his kingdom from his evil uncle Scar after the death of his father Mufasa. Originally a critically-praised, beloved 1994 Disney animated film, The Lion King was the highest-grossing movie of 1994 and remains the third highest grossing animated film of all time.
