It’s an exciting time in Philadelphia for many reasons, and one of the biggest is that two massive queens of pop are coming to town. This December, the honorable Cher and Madonna will both grace The City of Brotherly Love with musical performances.
And for giddy fans, unknowing travelers, and anyone looking for some stellar concerts to hit in Philadelphia this year, we are breaking down why you need to see these icons.
Cher is performing two shows at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Friday, December 6th. The bill originally had just one show slated for the night, but demand was so high that they added a second. The venue is a solid spot to host a superstar like Cher. Many of the biggest and most recognized musical acts to come through town each year play here, and it’s also home to the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers.
Cher will come to town with her Here We Go Again Tour, which will be on fresh stretch of American cities after touring Europe throughout the fall. This is her seventh solo concert tour, and it showcases the work of her twenty-sixth studio album Dancing Queen. The tour has been going since September 2018, and will conclude a little more than a week after the Philadelphia show.
On top of the fact the tour will end shortly after this show, there are several reasons why you’ll want to catch this Cher concert if you’re in Philly for it. When Cher released Dancing Queen in the fall of 2018, it was her first album in five years. That means that fans of this tour are seeing Cher perform hits live that she never had before.
In addition to the new sounds from the album, Cher’s catalogue of classic tracks is a major part of what makes her an icon. Fans coming out can enjoy the unbridled joy of hearing a track like “Believe,” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” live.
Madonna will perform at The Met Philadelphia on Sunday, December 8th. So, yes, if you’re an ultimate fan, you can see both Cher and Madonna on the same weekend in Philadelphia. The Met is an equally great venue as well, for entirely different reasons. A much more intimate theater (3,500 seats compared to nearly 20 thousand at the Wells Fargo Center), it’ll be nothing short of epic to see the Queen of Pop there.
Madonna will come to town on her Madame X Tour, which is the eleventh tour by the iconic singer, and it comes with her fourteenth studio album, also named Madame X. The all-theater tour is presenting Madonna in an intimate fashion that’s new for the seasoned musician.
Madonna is the ultimate pop icon, having taken over the music world in the 1980s and then continuing to reinvent not only her own sound, but the sound of pop music at large ever since.
In addition to the unique, theater-only style of tour this is, the show is also earning rave reviews for its surreal and imaginative production. Rolling Stone called the show, “The gloriously insane mess of your dreams.” Larger-than-life sets, dancers and theatrical performers, and the stunning skills of Madonna all make this more than worth attending.
